SALT TO THE SEA To Be Adapted By THE FAULT IN OUR STARS Scribes

Heart-wrenching historical fiction SALT TO THE SEA is being developed for the big screen!

After a studio bidding war, the rights to Ruta Sepetys‘ 2016 Young Adult Historical Fiction novel Salt to the Sea have gone to Universal pictures, and the studio is wasting no time when it comes to developing the project.

Based on true events, Salt to the Sea follows four teenage World War II refugees from East Prussia– Alfred, Emilia, Florian, and Joana– fleeing from invading Russian troops. The four come together, vying for spots on theĀ Wilhelm Gustloff, a transport ship offering a chance at escape and safety to civilians. Instead, what they’ll get is the most devastating single maritime disaster in history.

According to Deadline, Universal has already hired Scott Neustadter and Michael Weber, the highly-sought screenwriters behind (500) Days of Summer and The Fault In Our Stars, to adapt the novel for film. Weber spoke out about the adaptation via Twitter:

Ruta Sepetys is a powerhouse of YA historical fiction, having also written Between Shades of Grey, a World War II drama that’s been adapted into the new film Ashes In The Snow starring Bel Powley (expected out sometime in late 2017 or early 2018), and Out of the Easy, set in the underbelly of New Orleans in the 1950s.

The studio has not announced an expected timeframe for the film’s release.

You can order the novel now via Amazon.
