SUPERNATURAL at SDCC 2016 | Q&A with Jared Padalecki

Jared Padalecki looks back on what he was like at the very beginning of SUPERNATURAL, and explains what’s up for Sam in season 12 of the show.

What would Supernatural season 12 Jared say to the season 1 Jared? That question started things off for the few minutes we had Jared Padalecki with us.

“Always keep fighting. Stick…stick it through? There was a lot of season one and season two, three, and four—for a long time, Jared had trouble with going away and being away from friends and family. It sort of mirrored Sam’s life.”

He continued, talking about how the changes in the show troubled him at the time.

“Like stupid stuff. I think a lot of Jared was pushing back what he knew was inevitable, as Sam was. There was a lot, also- I’m not an old man by any means, but life can be very different at 44 than it is at 22. And especially very different when you’ve got a 2 and 4-year-old.”

In regards to this upcoming season, with Sam and Dean’s mother returning, he talks about how Sam’s reaction at having his mother around.

“I feel like for Sam, it’s the first time we’re going to see him as a son, because he didn’t have a relationship with his dad. It was more butting heads and a contentious thing,. He wanted to be away from his father. The irony is, is that it’s probably more mom’s fault than dad’s fault that we ended up where we are.”

Yeah, Jared understands that, but does Sammy?

“So, Sammy’s dad is the scapegoat for many years. I think Sam’s going to have to comes to terms with the fact that it wasn’t all his dad’s fault. And Mary, if the situation had been flipped, had John been killed, Mary probably would’ve done the same thing, and exact vengeance as well.

On the plus side, through all the thick and thin, they’ve helped people who’ve made the world a better place.”

Jared goes on to explain the acceptance of their lives.

“This is our life. Our family hunts. We’re hunters. This is our life. You can fight it all you want, but I think the world’s a better place for it.”

When asked about Sam’s relationship with Mary, he has an perspective of Sam and how this reunion will affect him.

“Through his relationship with Mary, we know a lot about Sam. Because I think Sam knows a lot about himself now. He was always sort of always wanting to be the lone wolf. Be out of here, y’know. Get me out of here, I’m going to college, I want to be with my wife. We’re in this situation where his mom’s back in his life and he wants to learn more about his family. He knows his brother pretty well, but he didn’t know a lot about where he really came from. I don’t think he had conversations with John. So, I think, in recanting to Mary, kind of what’s happened the last thirty-something years of Sam’s life, he’s going to learn a lot about himself. He’ll realize about what he’s done in kind of a crazy, cool retrospection. ‘K mom, here’s how I’ve been for the last thirty-something years. You won’t believe this!’ I think he’ll learn a lot about himself.”
