New and Old Faces to Appear in Season 3 of DC’S LEGENDS OF TOMORROW

We find out who’s coming back and why we have a Muslim superhero in the group in Season 3 of DC’s LEGENDS OF TOMORROW.

The cast and creative team for DC’s Legends of Tomorrow were at the Television Critics Association press tour today and they made a few announcements regarding the show’s upcoming third season.

Beware: Spoilers!

So, last season’s finale saw the Legends team breaking time. Now that that’s happened, it’s given the creative team a clever way to introduce a new character. Zari Adrianna Tomaz, played by Tala Ashe, was already announced earlier this year, but we have a few more details about her character. She plays a Muslim-American woman who is a “gray hat hacktivist” from the highly technologically advanced future of 2042. Although civilization has changed thoroughly due to it, humans with their fears and prejudices, unfortunately, have not.

Tala Ashe will play Zari Adrianna Tomaz in DC’s Legends of Tomorrow

Current politics have had a hand in prompting the introduction of Zari, so there’s that silver lining. Executive producer Marc Guggenheim explains further: “You might have heard there was this election. Not to get political, but something we all gravitate toward in the writers’ room was the character being Muslim. That was very important to us not to make a political statement or make it a thing… [because] someone’s race, religion, or sexual orientation is not the only aspect of their character.”

As for Zari’s link to the DC Universe, she is inspired by the DC Comics character, Isis. However, again due to the current use of the name in the real world, they chose a different moniker, which was probably for the best. “They’re kind of ruining things out there in the world. We just didn’t want the baggage quite frankly, especially given the fact that we are doing a Muslim superhero, it was just like opening up a can of worms. It’s just not worth it,” said Guggenheim.

Jes Macallan will be Agent Ava Sharpe

Other additions to the season will be Mistresses‘ Jes Macallan, who’ll play recurring character Special Agent Ava Sharpe of the Time Bureau, a secret organization that regulates and monitors time travel and protects history. Billy Zane will also appear on the show as the legendary P.T. Barnum.

As for returning faces, Arthur Darvill and Wentworth Miller were confirmed during San Diego Comic-Con to reprise their characters, Rip Hunter and Leonard Snart, respectively, in a recurring capacity. For Miller, this version of Snart is not the same one that left them. “We’re obviously really excited to bring Wentworth back on the show for a few episodes, but a different iteration of Mr. Snart. Chaos and merriment will ensue,” stated Guggenheim.

For Darvill, executive producer Phil Klemmer said this: “Now they’re competing with the best and brightest. Rip Hunter has reconstituted what the Time Masters were, so the existential question for the Legends is where do we fit into this universe?”

And the same thing goes for Neal McDonough‘s Damien Darhk, who wreaked havoc for Oliver Queen on Arrow. For this season, Darhk will be a series regular, which sounds like there’s going to be all kinds of drama from all  around for the Legends team.

One big possible return has yet to be confirmed, but they did reveal they spoke with Matt Ryan about appearing as Arrow fan favorite, Constantine. This is looking to be a banner year for Legends of Tomorrow fans.

DC’s Legends of Tomorrow returns October 10th at 9pm on The CW.
