Max and Robert Lightwood have been cast, plus a new character for SHADOWHUNTERS

Attention Shadowhunter fans!  Max and Robert Lightwood have been cast for ABC Family’s Shadowhunters!  Jack Fulton will be playing the youngest of the Lightwoods, and Alec and Isabelle’s younger brother, Max Lightwood.  And Paulino Nunes will be playing Robert Lightwood, the patriarch of the Lightwoods.  Here’s what author Cassandra Clare had shared on her Tumblr (via executive producer Ed Decter):

Several readers, spider senses tingling, have been asking about the casting of Robert and Max Lightwood. Showrunner Ed kindly took some time out of his schedule to shoot over these headshots.

Robert will be played by Paulino Nunes, and Max will be played by Jack Fulton. Ed will try to get a stealth shot of them in action behind the scenes. *finger wiggle* I’m interested to see how they’re incorporated into the show!

Despite his young age, Fulton has a list of credits that include the TV shows Orphan Black, 12 Monkeys, and a recurring role in Netflix’s Hemlock Grove.  He also had a cameo appearance in Adam Sandler’s latest film, Pixels.

Nunes’ credits include stints on TNT’s Falling Skies, the TV series version of The Firm, FX’s The Strain, and several Syfy and Canadian based shows.

In other related news, we have a first official casting for a new character that isn’t in the books.  Stephanie Bennett will be playing a guest starring role as a Shadowhunter named Lydia Branwell.

According to The Wrap, “Lydia is described as a beautiful, no-nonsense young Shadowhunter who  is an abrasive ‘badass.’  She has known terrible loss in her life, and she has become driven and harsh as a result — but under her hard shell lies considerable vulnerability.”

For those that have read The Infernal Devices trilogy that takes place in the same world as The Mortal Instruments series, the name Branwell should ring a bell.  Charlotte and Henry Branwell were major supporting characters in the trilogy.

Bennett has been seen on The CW’s iZombie and Disney’s The Descendants, and had a recurring role in Lifetime’s UnReal.

It’s always interesting to me when there’s a casting announcement for a character that was created solely for the adaptation.  However, I want to remind fans that that doesn’t always mean a bad thing.  Movies and TV shows are a different medium and yes, the story doesn’t always run the same way as the books do.  But despite there being those shows/movies that didn’t work because it strayed so far from the books (The Host, Eragon, My Sister’s Keeper, the unaired Delirium), there are prime examples, especially in TV, that have been very successful (The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, Vampire Diaries, The 100).

With that in mind, we should still be hopeful that this show will be awesome.
