The CW’s DC Superhero Universe Casts Gay Superhero The Ray

A new superhero is joining The CW and CW Seed!

The CW is introducing a new character to their DC Superhero Universe this fall during its annual crossover event that adds a new layer of representation to the line-up.

Russell Tovey (Quantico) will join this year’s Arrow, The Flash, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, and Supergirl crossover, called “Crisis on Earth-X”, as Ray Terrill aka The Ray, a superhero who can control light and convert it into energy forms after being exposed to a “genetic light bomb” by a government scientist. Created by Jack C. Harris and Joe Quesada, The Ray is also one of the few openly gay characters in the DC Comics universe. In the DC Rebirth comics, he works closely with many of the CW heroes, including Atom, Vixen, Black Canary, and Killer Frost.

The CW network president Mark Pedowitz announced plans to introduce the character last year.

According to TVLine, Tovey will also voice the character in a new CW Seed animated series called Freedom Fighters: The Ray following the crossover event, debuting sometime before the end of the year. The crossover event itself will begin on Monday, November 27th, including a special 9pm time slot for Arrow following Supergirl, and run through Wednesday.
