Why We Like Him (mild spoilers)

Newt is the heart of The Gladers. He sees the good in everyone and always does his best to understand. He teaches Thomas a lot about Glader life with a small-town wit and a great sense of humor despite all of the chaos around them. Even when diving into madness, Newt is still one of the most loyal and self-sacrificing friends Thomas could ever have. – Kait (thefandom.net)

Newt is the glue that keeps all of the Gladers together. He is a go with the flow kind of person who wants to make the world a better place. He believes in people who don’t believe in themselves and always wants to be part of the solution instead of the problem. – princessleiagoespink

Newt is the friend that people seem to take advantage of, not realizing how great he is until it’s too late.  He is one of those that you would think nothing could ever touch him or hurt him because he’s the one that everyone likes.  He’s the one that keeps it going smooth.  And he’s the one that you can be friends with the rest of your life because he understands you and genuinely likes you.  Yeah, he’s one of the best out there.  – TFGeekGirl (thefandom.net)

GALE HAWTHORNE (The Hunger Games)

Brief Summary (spoilers)

Strengths: Your picture perfect knight. Gale’s value for justice and honor turns him into a revolutionary that helps lead the way of the rebellion. He is the reason Katniss’s story has a happy ending.
Weakness: Gale can be pretty rash. He thinks on a bigger scale of the rebellion. He understands that the death of some for the survival of many is what builds the wall between him and Katnip.

Gale is the oldest child of the Hawthorne family with three younger siblings: Rory, Vick, and the only girl, Posy who was born after their father died in a mining accident that also killed Katniss’ father. After his father’s death, Gale struggles to provide for his family with help from his mother, Hazelle. To help feed his family, he hunted illegally in the forest adjacent to District 12, and he applied for tesserae many times. He is 19 in Catching Fire and Mockingjay.

When he was 14 years old, he met Katniss, who also lost her father in the same mine accident. They cross each other’s paths while hunting in the woods outside of District 12. Despite their initial misgivings about one another, the two slowly warm up to each other and become best friends. They attended the same school but really met at the mine site when it blew. At the beginning of The Hunger Games, Katniss notes that the only time she really smiles is when she is in the woods with Gale.

Katniss recalls that at 14, “Gale already looked like a man.” It is later mentioned he was over six feet tall. Similar to many people from The Seam, he has olive skin, straight black hair, and gray eyes.

Why We Like Him (mild spoilers)

Gale has always wanted the best for Katniss. Not only does he admire her from a distance, but he befriended her, taught her everything he knew, and helped her support her family. He bonds with her on a very personal level, and they are extremely close friends. Gale would sacrifice himself to save his family. He signed up for tesserae, and works tirelessly so that his younger siblings don’t have to. After the tributes of the 75th Hunger Games were broken out of the arena, and the Capitol targeted District 12, it was Gale who saved many of the citizens from certain death. He led them into the forest with minimal supplies and kept them alive for three days, until District 13 picked them up. After that, Gale played an important role in the revolution. He used his superior knowledge of traps to help engineer weapons to be used against the Capitol. He went out into the front lines of battle. He even worked on restoring Panem after the war was won. Gale is brave, selfless, and intelligent. He is opinionated and not afraid to speak his mind. He loved Katniss and tried to protect her and her family. – artysgirl (harrypotterfandom.net)

Gale is a born revolutionary. He always tries to do what is best, even if it isn’t what’s easy. He’s loyal to those he cares about and strictly adheres to his ideals. He’s single handedly supported his family for years and has helped Katniss do the same for hers. He can be a bit hot headed at times, but he never lets that get in the way doing what is necessary. Scores of people in Panem are alive because of Gale’s quick thinking and that’s reason enough to like him. – thgadminjessi
