Clary Fray was born to Valentine Morgenstern and Jocelyn Fairchild. She was named Clarissa Adele Morgenstern according to her mother’s wishes; while her father, Valentine had wanted to name her Seraphina after his mother. Her mother had turned against her father’s ideals months before her conception. During the time after her mother’s first child was born, she was suffering depression because of her strange feelings of rejection towards her son, Jonathan. Hoping to help Jocelyn, Valentine gave her doses of the angel Ithuriel’s blood, not knowing she was pregnant with Clary.
Clary is portrayed as being incredibly stubborn and a little sarcastic, but is a very caring person, with lots of compassion for her friends and family. Her extreme stuborness might have taken root because of the fact that her mother was extremely protective of her as a child. She goes to extreme lengths to accomplish what she wants, usually putting herself in danger most of the time, leaving those people who care for her, especially Jace and Jocelyn, extremely exasperated. Jace has even stated that her stuborness matches his, which was the reason they could not stand each other when they had first met.
She is also an artist like her mother, Jocelyn.
She is said to look almost exactly like her mother, with green eyes and curly red hair, thought she does not see it, nor does she see the beauty others see in her. In City of Bones, she says that she is a smaller less beautiful and more childlike version of her mother, and sometimes comments on her lack of a chest. She says that she has carroty-colored hair, rather than Jocelyn’s red hair. She also says that she has a light dusting of freckles and is around 5 foot tall. It is mentioned a few times that she dresses in a boyish fashion, wearing T-shirts, jeans and sneakers.

Why We Like Her

art by ardawling
Who doesn’t love a ginger? This girl’s personality is as fiery as her hair! Clary is forced into a world she never new existed when her mother is kidnapped. While most girls might sit around and cry or feel helpless, Clary finds out the truth about herself and what she is, a Shadowhunter, and dives in head first to save her mother, with some very attractive help of course. Clary is very feisty. She sometimes goes against orders, but it is always because she needs to help save some one; she is willing to take the risks others would rather take for her. Clary is far from perfect, and she realizes that, but she works with what she has and tries to make the best of things, like her twisted love life. One of the greatest heroines out there. – malfoyorwayland
TESSA GRAY (The Infernal Devices)
Brief Summary (spoilers)

art by smitth
A strong girl with an open mind and a burning love for books. Even when dropped into unreal situations, always able to keep it classy. She’s intelligent, and extremely kind. Her lack of knowledge as to what her true speicies is canbe a constant distraction. And her kindness may backfire sometimes. Not wanting to hurt people she loves will, in turn, cause her pain.

Theresa Gray is a sixteen-year-old American warlock in Victorian-Era England. She has spent the first sixteen years of her life being overprotected by her Aunt Harriet after the death of her parents, Elizabeth and Richard, in a carriage accident. She lives almost all her life in books, dreaming of having the kind of adventures the heroines she reads about do.
Tessa has smooth, brown hair and steely grayish-blue eyes. She thinks herself average and her hair unruly. She is also considerably taller than other girls and boys her age. Magnus, in City of Fallen Angels, says she has a serious face. When reminiscing about past times (bonus content of Clockwork Prince) Magnus thinks of Tessa as pretty (along with Sophie), not traditionally beautiful but kindly attractive. Jem and Will both think she is pretty.

Why We Like Her

Tessa Grey, my darling, I remember you saying once that you were an ordinary looking girl. You are so wrong; you are amazingly beautiful on the inside and the outside. You care about everyone with all your heart and because of that you put all of your friends and others before yourself, no matter the gender, age or status. You have the bravery of all the greatest heroines you love; you are not afraid of anything and have faced many challenges. Things that would have broken 99.9% of other people but you stood firm. You kept going. Your wit and love of literature just shows that you are a young lady ahead of your time. They way you reply to Will’s wit with your own comebacks and that your not afraid to read books that others in your time would consider nothing but inappropriate. I have the deepest regard for you and I would give anything to meet you in real life, however unfortunately that cannot be. You are my favorite character of any books or movies ever created and there will always be a place for you in my heart. Keep strong Tessa, I know you stills have tough times ahead of you but keep resolute. I know we can all rely on you. – theherondalegirl
She’s a girl we die-hard book lovers can relate to. Books keep her going and the characters in those books motivate her. She perfectly straddles the line between respectable woman and tenacious fighter. – Ice-ridden
