Veronica Roth Addresses Differences Between INSURGENT Book and Movie

Veronica Roth knows some fans are apprehensive about INSURGENT’s book-to-movie differences…

In fact, the author of the DIVERGENT series admitted she was worried about them too. However, after she sat through a private screening of the film, Veronica Roth thinks we should forget our worries.

The changes– such as the flash drive turned “mystery box”, the experimentation room with the tentacled simulation machine, and Tris no longer fearing guns after killing Will– have been controversial among fans.

Roth told fans on Tumblr that the differences actually make the movie easier to understand:

“Insurgent, the book, has a complicated plot—a lot of moving parts, a lot of ups and downs. That sort of thing can work in a book, but if it’s translated directly to the screen, it makes for a messy, confusing movie. The changes that were made streamline the story so it makes sense for this new format; in other words, they work.”

More importantly, Roth goes on to say, the emotional tone and character personalities remain steadfast and lovable.

Fandom on the whole tends to get very caught up in changing details between books and their movie adaptations, but time has shown that few of these changes have an effect on the overall story. In a time when studios have seen the unsavory effects of drifting too far from the source material, Veronica’s right about what we’ve seen so far.

INSURGENT is out in theaters on March 20, 2015!
