UNWIND cast to include THE HUNGER GAMES’ Ian Nelson

UnWind cast reveals The Hunger Games’ Ian Nelson and The Flowers in the Attic’s Kiernan Shipka in lead roles.

Finally!  We have major info on the movie adaptation of Neal Shusterman‘s science fiction novel UnWind.  In news regarding the director Roger Avary, Deadline revealed the UnWind cast, and suprisingly, they’re actually around the age of the characters! Or teenagers, at least.

Ian Nelson, Kiernan Shipka, and Percy Hynes White will be playing the roles of Connor Lassiter, Risa Ward, and Levi “Lev” Calder, respectively.  Ian Nelson may be most recognized for his role as young Derek Hale in MTV’s Teen Wolf or in his first role, the Tribute Boy from District 3 in The Hunger Games.  This will be his first lead role in a movie.

Kiernan Shipka was a regular on the AMC cable series Mad Men as playing Don Draper’s daughter, Sally.  She was also the voice of Jinora in Nickelodeon’s The Legend of Korra.  Plus, she took on the role of Cathy in the Lifetime movie The Flowers in the Attic, based on V.C. Andrews’ controversial and highly popular book of the same name.

Percy Hynes White has appeared on TV and movies, including Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb, The Grand Seduction, Syfy’s Defiance, and the Canadian series Murdoch Mysteries.

Other casting announcements were of the Admiral, who will be played by Bill Paxton (Texas Rising, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Aliens), and Officer Nelson will be played by Jay Baruchel (How to Train Your Dragon films, This is the End) in a somewhat against-type character for him.

Cameras roll in mid-October in Manitoba, Canada. The production is set up as a Canada-Germany Treaty Co-Production and follows a long list of collaborations between Don Carmody and Constantin Film.

UnwindBookCoverUnwind is the first of a series of four books called theThe Unwind Dystology.

Robert Kulzer said in statement, “Neal’s books are shockingly brilliant. If you want to know how a young adult feels in today’s world, you have to read Unwind. It is this generation’s Clockwork Orange. Roger and his daughter Gala have done an amazing job adapting Neal’s complex dystopian world into a crackling screenplay.”

Added Don Carmody, “We are excited to be in business with Nicolas, Jonathan and the great Voltage team. We were impressed by their passion for this material and for their support of Roger as the filmmaker.”

Nicolas Chartier added, “We are thrilled to be working with Roger, Don, Martin, Robert and the amazing production team of Constantin and Don Carmody on Unwind.  This will be one of the most sought after properties in Cannes.”
