THOR: RAGNAROK – Hela’s Look Inspired By Cosplayers

THOR: RAGNAROK’s Cate Blanchett used Youtube makeup tutorials for inspiration for Hela’s style!

In Thor: Ragnarok, Death herself is coming to Asgard and the only thing standing in her way is Thor, the God of Thunder, (Chris Hemsworth) and a big, green, angry Hulk (Mark Ruffalo). Played by the formidable Cate Blanchett, Hela is the first female villain depicted in the MCU. She is the Goddess of Death and after she is unleashed accidentally on Asgard, Thor and The Hulk must work together to defeat her with a little help from everyone’s favourite anti-hero/villain Loki (Tom Hiddleston).

In the comics, Hela normally wears an elaborate headdress. However, Blanchett thought seriously about how Hela would look without a headdress. Blanchett went to the heads of Marvel and said that she didn’t want Hela to be another faceless villain. One of the criticisms about Marvel villains in the past is that you cannot tell who the actor is behind all of the prosthetics and makeup. For example, Malekith (Christopher Eccleston) in Thor: The Dark World and Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace) in Guardians of the Galaxy.

Because of this Blanchett went to the one place everyone goes to for inspiration: Youtube.

“When I was starting to think about how she might look, I went back to the fanbase,” said Blanchett, who recently spoke to Yahoo. “All these girls were doing Hela makeup looks on YouTube. I thought about what their takes on her were. I spoke to Marvel about what she would look like when she would be unmasked, so she wasn’t a faceless, generic baddie. They were very open to everything.”

Thor: Ragnarok opens in theatres November 7th.
