Tatiana Maslany, Rooney Mara Testing For STAR WARS Standalone Film

The STAR WARS franchise is already testing actresses to star in its upcoming standalone spin-off.

When Disney acquired the rights to the STAR WARS franchise, they decided that a sequel trilogy just wasn’t enough. On top of episodes VII, VIII, and IX, the franchise will offer up standalone features that explore further into the galaxy and its unique mythology.

Last summer, it was announced that Gareth Edwards (GODZILLA) will direct the first spin-off. Now, the director is in search of his female lead!

Sources report that Edwards is screen testing Tatiana Maslany (ORPHAN BLACK), Rooney Mara (THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO), and Felicity Jones (THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING) for the mysterious role. However, Felicity Jones may not be considered a contender. The role is expected to interfere with her schedule for INFERNO, the prequel to THE DA VINCI CODE for which she’s already signed on.

However, this doesn’t guarantee a lock for either Maslany or Mara. A handful of other Hollywood actresses are reportedly set to test for the role later this week.

Edwards’ contribution to the STAR WARS universe will be the next franchise film released after STAR WARS EPISODE VII: THE FORCE AWAKENS. It’s due in theaters on December 16, 2016.
