MOVIE REVIEW on X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST

x_men_dofp-fi

For all those X-Men fanatics that want the movie to go exactly as it does in the comic, well, I would say to be open-minded about how this version runs.  It was already stated earlier on of some of the changes they made, which I think were pretty excellent choices.  Of course, the time frames of the past and the present in the movie had to be changed a bit to accommodate for a bleak future in the year 2023 (in the comics, the future was 2013).  Another smart move was changing the main time traveler from Kitty Pryde (Ellen Page) to Wolverine (Hugh Jackman).  I’m sure there were several factors for this, one, of course, being the highly popular actor Hugh Jackman, and another being that many are much more familiar with Wolverine than they are with Kitty Pryde.

With that in mind, Hugh Jackman isn’t necessarily the main character.  This is essentially an ensemble cast.  No one actor takes center stage the whole time.  Sometimes that may not be a good thing if any part of your ensemble actors are underperforming.  This cannot be said about the cast here.  When you think about it, it’s amazing how many multiple award-winning actors were involved in this comic-based movie.  And they don’t let the fact that it is comic-based deter them from giving standout performances.

Consider the actors playing both Professor Xs and Magnetos.  Although Sirs (and besties) Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen have less screentime than their younger counterparts, their presence and their respect for their freneship that has endured many years gives power to the performances of James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender.  You can see the hardships they’ve had to endure with each other and you can see how it’s given them an understanding of what they end up going through in the future.  It’s fantastic to see the talents on both sides, I have to say.

Jennifer Lawrence has a unique part in all of this as her character is neither Team X nor Team Magneto.  She’s stronger, more menacing, and does what neither side seems to not want to do.  Not only that, she does so with amazing kickass skills!

Hugh Jackman as Logan/Wolverine has a new struggle as he has to deal with keeping the peace for all sides, and all the while doing so without letting his temper get to him.  There’s no doubt that he definitely looks much older than when he started playing Wolverine, but the actor is stellar and he still rocks the Wolverine hair quite well.

Other notable actors playing their supporting parts are Peter Dinklage as Boliver Trask, Nicholas Hoult as Hank McCoy/Beast, and surprisingly, Evan Peters as Pietro Maximoff/Quicksilver.  Quicksilver, although I’m still not sure about his look, gave a bit of amusement to this X-men movie storyline, but his performance doesn’t come out as cheesy.

As for the other mutants that you’ve seen a bit of in promos, they are there, but just enough to help the story along, which was fine with me.  The main actors of the film do an excellent job of carrying the majority of the plot.

As far as rectifying the blasphemous events that happened in X-Men: The Last Stand, yes, they did!  And I would like to thank director Bryan Singer, the producers, and writers for righting the wrongs of that horrendous movie (if you liked The Last Stand, good on ya).  Not only that, they brought the best people from X-Men, X2, and X-Men: First Class together and resurrected x-Men to where it should be.

If you’re wondering if you want spend the extra cash to watch it in 3D, well, consider this: it was shot in 3D, so no retrofitting there, and if you have a keen eye for this stuff, you’ll be able to tell that it was most certainly shot in 3D.  It enhances the film visually.  But the storyline is what makes it successful.  I saw it in 3D and there were some points where I found the 3D element pretty cool, but it wasn’t absolutely necessary to enjoy the movie.

And if you’re wondering about whether you should stay until after the end credits.  Yes, you probably should.

The movie also stars Omar Sy, Booboo Stewart, Lucas Till, Halle Berry, Shawn Ashmore, Daniel Cudmore, Bingbing Fan, and Josh Helman.
