Top 5 Trailer Moments Cut From ROGUE ONE

WARNING: This post contains ROGUE ONE spoilers!

It’s pretty well known that the ending of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story got a massive overhaul in reshoots. We still loved the movie, but thanks to cutting and reshooting, there was plenty of footage we loved in the trailers that never even made it in. From quick glances to seemingly iconic lines, a lot changed between the rough draft and the final product. We’re not going to list all of it, but let’s all take a moment to mourn major scenes that could have been.

1) JYN TALKS BACK

“It’s a rebellion, isn’t it? I rebel.” That was the line everyone was quoting after the first trailer came out. It was the first sign of Jyn’s tough girl sass as she faces Mon Mothma and the rebellion as an outlier. We loved her snark and calm ferocity. AAAAAAND it’s not in the movie!

2) LIGHT-UP JYN

While we do see Jyn Erso in Imperial gear in the final product, we miss out on this incredible shot. Second only to Darth Vader’s lightsaber reveal, it’s one of best testaments to the power of great lighting on a film set. Plus, the character looks like a total badass!

3) KRENNIC’S BEACH WALK

The trailers have a deliciously eerie shot of Director Orson Krennic walking through the shallow waters of Scarif at sunset, surrounded by the bodies of dead Stormtroopers and rebels, his white cape billowing behind him. It represents the character’s power and brutality wonderfully, but it’s on the cutting room floor somewhere. Krennic definitely makes it to Scarif, but we don’t see him walking into the citadel before he faces off with Jyn and Cassian.

4) JYN V. THE TIE FIGHTER

When Jyn originally went to realign the satellite to transmit plans to the rebels, she found herself face-to-face with a TIE fighter. It was a tease that made us screech of bit when we first saw the previews and we imagine the seen would have been intense. But in the film, Jyn realigns the satellite without any interference. After that task she’s confronted by Krennic, but Cassian takes him out, leaving Jyn completely out of the action. Bleh!

5) JYN AND CASSIAN UNDER THE AT-AT

The movie features precisely zero scenes of Jyn Erso and Cassian Andor fighting alongside the other rebels on the surface of Scarif. But there are several moments like this in the trailer– which probably explains why Jyn and Cassian are on a distant shore when the Deathstar hits, even though they were just in the citadel taking out Krennic. Our favorite shot is Jyn, Cassian, and a handful of other rebels facing down a towering AT-AT as they rush through the wild, gorgeous landscape.

Mostly, it seems the movie skipped out on the beauty shots for the sake of condensing the story, but we’re still feeling some FOMO about the thrills they could have offered.
