Lionsgate Planning More Movies In TWILIGHT, THE HUNGER GAMES Universes

Can new material keep TWILIGHT and THE HUNGER GAMES alive at the movies?

Lionsgate has had a fair amount of success with franchises based on teen novels, and they’re not ready to let it go.

Just days after announcing plans to revive the struggling Divergent series on STARZ, CEO Jon Feltheimer suggested that there’s more to come from other franchises as well during a quarterly earnings call with stock analysts, according to Variety.

“There are a lot more stories to be told, and we’re ready to tell them when our creators are ready to tell those stories,” he said of The Twilight Saga and The Hunger Games franchise, both of which were produced by the studios.

In this instance, “creators” does not necessarily include authors Stephenie Meyer or Suzanne Collins, who sold the rights to their novel to the filmmakers and thus left the door open to further interpretation, but it would be a smart move for the studio to get their blessing if they want diehard fans to follow.

While to doesn’t seem likely that we’ll see the return of Katniss Everdeen or Bella Swan, the studio could use the established world for prequels and sequels. Fans have mentioned plenty of ideas for both franchises, including a prequel to The Hunger Games following young Haymitch during his Quarter Quell and a sequel to Twilight following Jacob and an age-appropriate Renesmee. New movies could also follow new characters altogether.

Lionsgate still seems to be toying with their ideas very loosely and hasn’t announced what direction that would take for new stories or potential time frames for release.

Originally, The Twilight Saga ended in November 2012, while The Hunger Games films bowed in November 2015.
