DIVERGENT Finale Will Be TV Movie, Spin-Off Series To Follow

THE DIVERGENT SERIES: ASCENDANT will still happen, but it will be much different than the rest of the series.

After The Divergent Series: Allegiant fumbled dramatically at the box office this March, the final movie in the series will take a surprising step and head to television.

The Divergent Series: Ascendant was originally set to hit the big screen on June 9, 2017, going up against Tom Cruise’s The Mummy reboot and World War Z 2. But when Allegiant only grossed $66 million domestically and $113 million in foreign markets, it became clear that Lionsgate couldn’t do another big budget film for the ending. Strangely enough, the movie series would already be over if the studio had not decided to split the final book in the trilogy into two films.

The television movie will reportedly wrap up the main storyline while introducing a new cast that will star in a Divergent TV spin-off series.

The big fallout of this change is that the film cast is no longer contractually obligated to return. With a much, much smaller budget, these Hollywood stars would have to agree to a massive pay cut amidst a lower quality film. Basically, the only thing keeping them on board would be respect for the series and the goodness of their own hearts. None of the actors have publicly commented on the news so far.

Lee Toland Krieger (Age of Adaline) is still set to direct the project.

The Divergent Series: Ascendant TV movie and spin-off has yet to be pitched to networks and does not have a release date yet, according to Variety. However, Lionsgate has a deal to air the other Divergent movies on TNT and owns smaller television stations of its own.
