Director of BLACK PANTHER Talks About Representation in Movies

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Ryan Coogler talks about the importance of diversity in superhero movies!

Over the past couple of years, the diversity of characters in TV shows and movies has been criticised. Many people have felt that there has not been enough representation of anyone other than cisgender white men and women.

In an interview, the director of Black Panther, Ryan Coogler, spoke about how he felt about the representation of non-white characters in superhero films.

“The superhero field is a field where there’s not a lot of representation,” the filmmaker told EW. “It’s traditionally white male, but the fans look like the world. So, naturally, people are going to yearn to see someone flying around doing these incredible things that looks like them. It’s an incredible opportunity, but that’s what keeps me up at night – for better and for worse.”

Chadwick Boseman returns as T’Challa for Black Panther, while Michael B. Jordan plays villain Erik Killmonger, and Lupita Nyong’o and Danai Gurira play members of Wakanda’s special forces known as the Dora Milaje.

The lack of representation of non-white characters in films will not be solved by one movie, however, it is an important step in the right direction.
