A Lovers’ Spat? Behind-The-Scenes Footage From the Set of DC’s ‘Suicide Squad’

Without a doubt, the relationship between The Joker and Harley Quinn is one of the most complex relationships in the DC universe, perhaps the most complex. The pair flit between instances of near-fatal fisticuffs and something that could be akin to mutual affection.

The speculation on Comicbook.com is that this could be a flashback scene, as Harley Quinn (portrayed by Margot Robbie) doesn’t seem to be ‘Harley Quinn’, but rather Dr Harleen Frances Quinzel (Harley Quinn’s past persona, you could say). The BTS video consists of an exchange between Harley and an occupant of a luxury sports car, that contains the phrase, “Get out of the car!”. The door opens and, lo and behold, The Joker (Jared Leto) emerges. They have an animated discussion in which Harley tries to embrace him, but is softly rejected by the green-haired antagonist. Take note that this exchange is happening in the middle of a road, and that it is highly likely that someone is going to become annoyed at the hold-up. This ‘someone’ is a truck driver who approaches the pair with a tyre iron. After an incredibly brief exchange with The Joker, Harley could almost be considered to be ‘defending’ her conversational partner from a possible attack by letting the truck driver taste lead. Yep, she shoots him.

The couple remain unfazed, living up to their sociopathic tendencies, and continue their discussion. In the footage after, The Joker assaults Harley and moves to walk around his car. The Joker drives away after another brief exchange with his partner, flashing his car number plate, which reads ‘HAHAHA’.

All this seems to give us some insight into the tone of the movie and the relationship between the two that will be portrayed. But don’t fear, Robbie and Leto fans. There appears to be no bad blood between the two co-workers, as in gifs of the scene that’ve been posted onto the blogging site Tumblr, Robbie was seen to mouth the word ‘p*ssy‘ at the car, and Leto responded by revving the engine in retaliation. Their exchange is adorably humorous.
