Amandla Stenberg’s portrayal of Maddy averaged 9 out of 10, while Nick Robinson’s portrayal of Olly averaged 8.6 out of 10. Kait said “Amanda played Maddy is shy, curious, determined with just a hint of rebel, just as I imagined her in the books,” while “Nick Robinson was great for Olly as he comes off as so honest and unassuming with plenty of charisma to boot!”
While it hit 8.5 out of 10 for faithfulness to the book, Kait did mention one minor scene she had wished was in the movie. “I really liked the moment when Maddy heads to Carla’s house before going to Hawaii, but I understand why it didn’t make the cut.”
However, the additional visual of Maddy and Olly’s texting made up for it, according to both reviewers Kait and Leslie. “I like the way the movie depicted text conversations between Maddy and Olly by transporting them into Maddy’s architecture models. I thought it was a clever way adapt something that works better on paper to something move visual.”
As for favorite scenes, the first kiss was a big one for both Kait and Nat. Other favorites were the revelation of Maddy’s real diagnosis, when Maddy and Olly run off to Hawaii, and the reunion at the end of the movie.
