Meet “Streetwise” Alice on ONCE UPON A TIME Season 7

ONCE UPON A TIME Season 7 begins tomorrow evening – before we lose ourselves in the world of Hyperion Heights, let’s take a look at one of the more mysterious characters in the neighborhood.

Recently, we took a look at the women of Once Upon a Time Season 7, including Lucy (Alison Fernandez), Cinderella (Dania Ramirez), Lady Tremaine (Gabriella Anwar), Drizella (Adelaide Kane), Tiana (Mekia Cox), and, finally, Alice of Wonderland fame (Rose Reynolds). We knew some details about every character except Alice – but luckily, Reynolds herself has the scoop for us.

Reynolds describes Alice (AKA Tilly) as a “streetwise orphan” with “eyes all over Hyperion Heights.” It sounds like her story, and her true allegiances, will be similar to Rumplestilskin’s – we won’t be sure about anything with her, especially not right away. Reynolds explains,

She’s stealthy. She’s clever, and she’s very independent, but she’s very enigmatic, so we don’t know a lot about her in the beginning, and she keeps striking up unlikely friendships with Hook and Gold. I think she’s very much on her own terms, so she’ll be friends with you, but you don’t know how long for. As I say, Tilly’s the eyes of Hyperion Heights. She sees everything, and she’s also the source of information for lots of people.

The similarities with Rumple just keep growing as Reynolds explains what Alice’s true motivation is:

She wants to be a part of something. She is this loner, she is independent, but she is lonely, and she wants to be a part of something, she wants to feel connected with people, and I think she desperately wants family. I think she’s desperately looking and searching for that. That’s what drives her a lot of the episodes, a lot of the scenes that we’ve been exploring and playing with at the moment. It’s: Where am I and where do I belong?

Like Rumple, Alice wants to find family. Unlike Rumple, it doesn’t sound like there’s a literal family member that Alice is searching for; rather, she wants to find a sense of family, which, as Reynolds points out, is “such a universal idea.” We will meet Alice right away in episode 1, but Reynolds says that we can look forward to some big Alice moments in episode 4.

Once Upon a Time returns for its seventh season tomorrow, October 6th, at 8 PM ET.
