The Fandom’s BookCon 2016 Recap

The Fandom attended BookCon 2016 last weekend and, in addition to scoring a huge pile of books, we met some pretty awesome authors.

BookCon 2016 was a crazy, crowded weekend full of books, authors, publishers, and fans — and The Fandom was there to take it all in. Read on to hear more about our highlights from the largest book convention of the nation.

Meeting The Authors

We were lucky enough to have full interviews with esteemed YA authors Sara Shepard (Pretty Little Liars, The Amateurs) and Alexandra Bracken (The Darkest Minds, Passenger), both of which shared some interesting insight about what it’s like to write in YA genre. We also met new YA author Ashley Royer, who got her start by writing fanfiction.

Additionally, we met the awesome Susan Dennard (Truthwitch) and finally figured out how to correctly pronounce Iseult’s name. She was gracious, kind, and way excited to hear the awesome things we had to say about Truthwitch  — bring on Windwitch please!

We also met Divergent’s Veronica Roth, which was as cool as it sounds. She passed out preview booklets of her upcoming book.

We also met other authors, including Robyn Carr and Joe Ponder.

Checking Out The Vendors

There was a whole myriad of interesting booths at BookCon (as well as BEA). A particularly cool one was that of Neoglyphic Entertainment, a storytelling platform that combines multiple layers of media to create an immersive experience for readers. They had us check out their virtual reality experience, which was awesome, and something that was really interesting was that they’ve paired their novel with cinematic music in an app.

Litographs had a popular booth that featured discounted gift cards and, eventually, allowed fans to get special litograph posters signed by Sarah J. Maas (Throne Of Glass). Needless to say, that line was a long one!

Panels

BookCon offered many different panels for fans to attend. While it was impossible to get to all of them, fans raved on twitter about how interesting panels such as one on female friendships (one of Alex Bracken’s favorite things to write) and film adaptations (a Cassandra Clare specialty). Victoria Aveyard also surprised excited fans by showing up to a panel with Alex. Many panels ended up being standing room only because of the high volume of fans!

Authors such as Veronica Roth, Cassandra Clare, Victoria Aveyard, and The Property Brothers all had ticketed signings that fans could sign up for. Trust us when we say the line for the tickets were the longest we saw!

Despite some of the long waits, BookCon 2016 was a definite success for us at The Fandom.
