Exclusive Interview: EVER THE BRAVE Author Erin Summerill Talks Magic, Romance, and Writing

Get the scoop on the CLASH OF KINGDOMS series straight from author Erin Summerill!

Erin Summerill made a big impression on fantasy lovers last year with Ever The Hunted, a story that takes place in a kingdom on the brink of war that’s part murder mystery, part romantic adventure. The conclusion to the Clash of Kingdoms duology, Ever The Brave, hits shelves this Tuesday!

Before the release, we chatted with Erin all about crafting the world, Britta and Cohen’s swoony relationship, things to expect from Ever The Brave, and what’s next for the universe. Take a look!

How did you first develop the plot of the Clash of Kingdoms novels?

After the initial idea came to me, I wrote down the ending. I like to know what is going to happen and work my way towards the ending. It keeps me more focused. To plot the book, I used a few different methods. I’m a big fan of Blake Snyder’s Save The Cat. If you’re new to writing, this is a must read. I also like Lisa Cron’s Storygenius.
I make sure I have all the major plot points written down, and then I start drafting.

What do you love most about Britta?

I love that Britta is pragmatic. She’s lived a life of solitude so she has learned to fend for herself. She’s realistic about life and sometimes she can be pessimistic, but I feel like that makes her more real. She’s dedicated to her family, and her dedication often drives her decisions.

Other than our lovebirds, who were your favorite characters to create and why?

I absolutely loved Enat from Ever the Hunted. She’s plucky and cranky, but she has so many interesting secrets. I love how she softens when Britta is around.

Another favorite of mine is Leif. He’s a perfect friend. He can be fierce and frightening when needed, but he’s always there to be supportive and lend a shoulder to lean on.

Can you tell us anything about new characters we’ll meet in Ever The Brave?

We find out more about the King of Malam. He’s mostly absent in the first book, so it’s exciting to delve more into his character. He’s a man that is determined to take back his kingdom and be a good leader. But there are a lot of obstacles in his way. I think his actions and choices in Ever The Brave will charm most any reader!

Ever The Hunted introduced us to a world of Channelers with magical abilities. How did you decide upon the rules for Channeler magic, and can we expect to see more of it in the sequel?

Yes, we delve deeper into Channeler magic. When developing this system, I wanted there to be a balance in power. So for every magical action, there must be a reaction. Just like in life, there are people who want to fix the system to benefit them. We see that happen with the magic system in book two and learn more of the complexities of the magic system. And there are runes!!! I love runes!

If you could be a Channeler, which type would you want to be and why?

I think I would want to be a wind Channeler. They can influence the air currents. I’ve been studying aerodynamics a lot and I think there is so much a Channeler could do with that! (Stay tuned for Once A King…a book that takes place in the Clash of Kingdoms world!)

Cohen is a great partner to Britta. Who are some of your favorite book boyfriends?

There are so many to choose from, but off the top of my head are Rhys and Po. I love Rhys from A Court of Mist and Fury!!! He’s the best anti-hero! Po from Graceling was an all-around good guy.

What’s your writing process like?

I write mid-day, when my house is quiet, and I have a cold Coke Zero beside me. Sometimes I talk through my ideas with a friend, and then I set a writing goal, and I try to meet that goal for the day. Other days, when my brain is too sluggish to come up with new material, I work on editing what I’ve already written.

Can you recommend any books you’ve read and loved recently to our readers?

Oh yes!!! I love love love books. In fact, I am often reading when I should be writing! I will tell you a few. I loved:
Caraval by Stephanie Garber
Windwitch by Susan Dennard
Traitor to the Throne by Alwyn Hamilton
