Authors Jonathan Maberry and Kami Garcia delve into the young lives of Mulder and Scully in two THE X-FILES ORIGINS YA novels.
USA Today has a new interview with authors Jonathan Maberry and Kami Garcia where they discuss The X-Files Origins novels, share their favourite X-Files monsters and more! Check it out!
Jessie: Tell us about the romances!
Jonathan: When we first meet 15-year-old Dana Scully in Devil’s Advocate, she’s pretty inexperienced with boys. Being an Army brat with a father who moved around a lot, she’s never really had the chance to settle in, make many friends or get involved with a boy. That’s changing now that her family lives in Craiger. She meets two different teens — a handsome science geek named Ethan, who wants to be a forensic scientist and a mysterious, and a possibly dangerous young man named Angelo, who always seems to be around the places where strange things happen to Dana. She’s caught between the two worlds they each represent.
Kami: This isn’t the first time I’ve written about Mulder as a teen. I wrote a short story called Black Hole Son for The X-Files anthology The Truth Is Out There, edited by Jonathan. In Black Hole Son, Mulder is 16, and he has a monster crush on his best friend, Phoebe. So I brought Phoebe back in Agent of Chaos. She’s a genius, with the mind of a young Stephen Hawking, and the hotness factor of a young Farrah Fawcett.
Jessie: What’s next for Scully and Mulder?
Jonathan: We are having some interesting creative discussions about where to go next, should we get the green light to do more books. Each of us has left elements in place in our novels so that we can build on what’s already happened while still tell completely new stories. Unfortunately, to say more would be to spoiler some of what readers will encounter in our books. One thing I can say, though, is that Scully and Mulder will never meet in the novels. That would go against what happened in episode one of the series, and we have been very diligent about sticking to the existing storyline. We’re not changing the X-Files history, but rather building onto it.
Kami: In terms of the novels? We aren’t sure. I guess it depends on how much readers like Agent of Chaos and Devil’s Advocate. But I would love to write another novel about Mulder. It was so much fun.
