Book Review: LUCKY IN LOVE By Kasie West

1

Kasie West delivers another sweet YA romance with her latest book, Lucky in Love.

Lucky in Love follows Maddie, a high school senior who is one of the smartest in her class. Although she excels in her studies, her social and home life needs some improvement. Ever since her dad lost his job, her family has struggled to get by, her parents fight constantly and her brother has sunk into a depression. Her free time is spent studying with her two friends, Elise and Blaire. One of the only bright spots of her week is when she is at her job at the Santa Ana Zoo where she works along side her fun easygoing coworker, Seth.

Maddie’s life instantly changes when at the end of her disappointing 18th birthday, she impulsively buys a lottery ticket and wins! Maddie becomes 35 million dollars richer over night and she immediately thinks all her troubles will go away. Her family is finally out of debt and her parents and brother are in high spirits. As you can imagine, it doesn’t turn out exactly the way she hoped.

When a local news station runs a story on Maddie, her anonymity becomes a thing of the past and it seems like everyone wants to be her friend. Life in the spotlight is fun for a while, but when rumors on how Maddie spends her money spread and people start coming to her for money, she doesn’t know who she can trust anymore.

The only person she can feel herself around is Seth. Due to a timely grounding, it appears as if he doesn’t know Maddie’s big news yet. She is reluctant to tell him of her lottery win, because she fears he will start to treat her differently like all her other friends have been.

Like Kasie West’s other books, Lucky in Love is a light-hearted charming contemporary YA romance. I enjoyed the premise immensely. It really makes you think about what you would do if you won the lottery. Seth Nguyen is a pretty perfect love interest for Maddie because they balance each other out. Where Maddie can be a bit uptight, Seth is just as easygoing. I’d have liked to see more scenes between two.

I was not a fan of how easily Maddie was swayed into spending too much money on things she did not initially want or need. She seemed pretty naïve for someone who is supposedly smart enough to get into Stanford. It was a little frustrating to read but I can understand that someone as young as Maddie who has never had to deal with her own finances before making some mistakes right off the bat.

Lucky in Love is a heart-warming story of finding love even as your whole world turns upside down. This is a great summer beach read for fans of contemporary romance. Though the story is flawed, the overall feel of the book is one of hope and happiness. I definitely recommend picking up a copy of Kasie West’s latest addition.
