Book Review: THE TRUTH BENEATH THE LIES By Amanda Searcy

2

Amanda Searcy’s The Truth Beneath the Lies brings the reader a story of two girls and plenty of suspense.

Betsy is on-edge. She may be in a new town and starting at a new school, but her past is still nagging her every second. The black monster (better known as a cell phone) lurks under her bed. Each day it gives her is a gift, but Betsy knows the generosity won’t last. She’ll be killed. It’s only a matter of time.

Kayla’s bubble is deflating quickly. Things between her best friend are fizzling. She lost her job. But she still has her boyfriend, Jordan, who is practically perfect. It’s Jordan’s friend, Drake, who is a little too suspicious. Women are being attacked around the neighborhood, and Kayla is worried she could be next.

Betsy and Kayla are both very well-developed characters. I felt sympathy for each of them. I desperately wanted these girls to be okay–heck, at least survive. The secondary and minor characters are also ones to keep an eye on. Not a single person was introduced that did not add depth to the girls’ stories.

Searcy’s writing style stood out to me in The Truth Beneath the Lies. Her words were engaging, crisp, and poignant. The pace of the plot is where I found problems in the novel. With the way the book was advertised (even on its cover), I’d been anticipating something to come along, throw a wrench in the story, and for the plot to continue to build from there. I kept waiting and waiting, and before I knew it, I’d been hanging on for 250 pages, and the reveal still had not been delivered explicitly. It took a long time to reach a climax, but in the meantime, I didn’t hate navigating through the journey.

If you stay for the sake of the characters, The Truth Beneath the Lies will reward you with a satisfying conclusion.

*Please note that there are possible triggers in this novel. Drug addiction/use and gun violence are both included, though the plot is not exclusive to either of them.*

About Author

Hey-hey! I'm Lara (like "Sarah" but with an "L" instead of an "S"). I'm a 20-something substitute teacher. (Slowly) working on my first novel. Reading plenty of YA as research in the meantime. Swimming deep in the Hunger Games, Supernatural, FRIENDS, and Scrubs fandoms.
