Blog Tour: Modern Dating With ALEX & ELIZA + Giveaway

Ahhhh… Alexander Hamilton and Elizabeth Schuyler! Theirs is a tumultuous love story that’s known across the world thanks to history and Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton, but Melissa de la Cruz has even more story to tell in her new YA romance, Alex & Eliza: A Love Story!

Alex & Eliza fills in the time between the couple’s first meeting at Pastures, the Schuyler family estate, and their wedding in 1780. From unsavory first impressions and unconventional dates to class warfare and actual warfare, there’s a lot to cover. Still, we can’t help but imagine what dating would be like for Alex and Eliza in modern times, so we did a little theorizing…

Here’s Alexander Hamilton and Eliza Schuyler in modern times!

This is a founding father and his (future) wife we’re talking about, so you know that justice and politics would still be big factors in their relationship. Since we’re not in the middle of a war on American soil, Alex and Eliza’s position in society would be very different. Alex is a young but influential aide to and up-and-coming governor who has potential to be president someday. Eliza is the daughter of a longtime big city mayor in that same state. Unfortunately, Governor Washington and Mayor Schuyler are having a major public disagreement, which leads to a frazzled first meeting between Alex and Eliza at a charity fundraiser. But of course, differences in opinion don’t stop the attraction.

In more equal times, they meet again three years later in Washington, D.C., where they’re either working on a campaign for an up-and-coming politician or a special cause. Eliza’s sisters are there too, but they’re not paying attention much– Angelica is busy with John Church, an older guy with a motorcycle and a questionable reputation, while Peggy is busy wooing Stephen Van Rensselaer, a quiet but adorable nerdboy and the heir to a multi-billion dollar tech firm.

While the others go to movies and concerts, Alex and Eliza slowly fall in love while volunteering in soup kitchens, taking long, pointless walks through the city, and attending a few parties Eliza’s sisters put on. Alex offers to take Eliza for rides in his old, beat-up Camaro, but it isn’t in the best shape and doesn’t always run at opportune moments (but hey, it’s a classic!)

The problem in their relationship comes along when Eliza’s mother, Catherine, realizes their affections. She and her best friend, Susannah Livingston, had hoped that Eliza and Henry Livingston would end up together since they were babies. And so begins Catherine steps in as a bit of a “mom-ager,” trying to push Eliza and Henry together. Can Alex and Eliza admit their feelings for each other before everyone else gets in the way?

Alex & Eliza: A Love Story is out now.

1777. Albany, New York.

As battle cries of the American Revolution echo in the distance, servants flutter about preparing for one of New York society’s biggest events: the Schuylers’ grand ball. Descended from two of the oldest and most distinguished bloodlines in New York, the Schuylers are proud to be one of their fledgling country’s founding families, and even prouder still of their three daughters—Angelica, with her razor-sharp wit; Peggy, with her dazzling looks; and Eliza, whose beauty and charm rival that of both her sisters, though she’d rather be aiding the colonists’ cause than dressing up for some silly ball.

Still, she can barely contain her excitement when she hears of the arrival of one Alexander Hamilton, a mysterious, rakish young colonel and General George Washington’s right-hand man. Though Alex has arrived as the bearer of bad news for the Schuylers, he can’t believe his luck—as an orphan, and a bastard one at that—to be in such esteemed company. And when Alex and Eliza meet that fateful night, so begins an epic love story that would forever change the course of American history.
